Jewish Guilt

I have sufficiently been guilted into compiling a live journal by Kate. I prefer this to myspace anyway. So here goes my first entry...

Life is full of changes right now and it makes it hard to see any sort of solidity in the coming years. I need to start a doctoral/masters program. The options here are seemingly endless. Currently the school of choice is U of Delaware. Why?

1. U of D has a masters program that is set up like a junior doctoral program. Essentially you apply for the phd program and they can accept you completely into the program, or into the masters as prep thing. This greatly shortens up the time spent here than if i did a Masters w/ thesis elsewhere and transferred to a doctoral program.

2. U of D is not in Indiana...nuff said.

3. U of D is on the East Coast and thus closer to Kate and Kate. These two women have had a profound influence on my life in the last years and I cannot imagine not living at least slightly closer.

4. U of D is near horse country...nuff said again :)

5. U of D is a bastion of Constructivist Theory, which is where my heart lies in poli sci. Additionally, U of D is not a private (read: expensive and hard to get into) liberal arts college. Someone with my GPA and undergraduate record could handle applying there and not getting lost in the shuffle. My current profs think that it is within my reach and is a good fit for my study and research style.

6. U of D's program provides a start to finish approach so that I don't have to leave half way through my post-under grad work to relocate.

7. U of D has a concentration in qualitative analysis, with a taste of quantitative. This allows me to feel qualified to approach entry level quantity based teaching, while still allowing me to be fully active in the qualitative aspect. I will get a button like my fellow qualies and wear it to Int. Studies meetings.

I am a dork that I am this excited about this. This gives me a goal, a purpose and some direction. If U of D ends up not accepting me, that's okay. There is a back up plan to this that is equally as good, but completely different. The world has a funny way of working itself out.

I will be fine.
